This large basket started out as a pattern from Judith Richmond called the "New England Tote Basket". It uses a wooden base with the swing handles attached. Before weaving it, I found that Longaberger baskets has a basket liner that is almost the same size as the pattern. I got the liner and then wove the basket to fit the plastic liner. My mother sewed for me the sunflower fabric insert. I love this basket as it is sturdy and has been well used over the years to carry many things. When we lived in Germany I would take it to the market to carry home my groceries for the day. It was just the right size to hold a liter of milk, some hard rolls, wurst or German sausages, and some produce. Do a search for Judith's patterns. What a great basket!! I can think of many many things to put in it.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this basket!! It also reminded me of Germany, where I spent many years (in Kürten and Weimar). Everyone carried these totes to the store because buying bags for their purchases could get pretty expensive after awhile. Maybe the U.S. will eventually catch on to the "tote phase." :)
ReplyDeleteJudy Richmond's patterns are absolutely gorgeous! I just ordered the pattern for this tote, as well as her chips and salsa bowl baskets. Totally cool! I also like Flo Hoppe's designs (for round reed) and John NcGuire's Shaker baskets. Wow! What beautiful baskets!
I don't know if your mother would be willing to do it, but personally, I would love to learn how to make basket liners. I've just begun to weave baskets (thanks to you, Nancy :) ), and I think that it would be nice if I had some liners to go with them!
