Oh my goodness! I am sooo deeply impressed with your words and the love you convey through them. I have just found your site and am genuinely in awe. I love that you are Christian and am letting the world know...
I am new to basket weaving but find I enjoy it a great deal.The issue I am having is trying to find pattern for a Twill utensil basket. My daughter has asked me to make her one for Christmas but the pattern only calls for 5x5x8 tall and the pictured one (The Basket Book - Lyn Siler)states only to make it "larger" with no specific measurements. Hence, my dilemma. I have tried to write to her to no avail.

If you could afford me any help, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance. God Bless.

I wish I knew how to sew. I mean I can sew on a button and I have muddled my way through sewing a liner for a basket, but anything were you would need to see a nice straight seam and piecing is beyond my skill set. I need to take a class sometime. I don't think I would make a quilt, but I would at least like to be able to make a pillow if I wanted to.

The lady that taught me to weave used minwax, mineral spirits, linseed oil mixed, so,so did I. Then I read your blog and the last ones I've woven I've only used the yellow can of minwax. Much easier and a very nice finish.

Hi Nancy,

I don't normally put finishes on my baskets, especially if I used colored reed. I like the way the reed ages and changes color as older it gets. I think each basket is like a living thing and each basket ages differently and it tells a different story. I have used danish oil in the past snf I've heard of people spraying liquid gold on their baskets but I've never done that myself.

I agree with the suggestions of adding round reed spokes alongside the original willow spokes. The overall friction of the weavers should keep the new spokes inserted. I wouldn't carry a baby or a bowling ball in the finished basket, but it should be sturdy enough for light use and definitely should look nice for display.

It's very hard to tell from the picture what exactly to do, but I wonder if you would do a few rows of twining at the rim, then insert new round reed spokes into the twining making them as long as you need them to do the rim. Hope that makes sense!
